刘向（前77—前6），是西汉后期的博学大家，原名更生，字子政。历仕汉宣、元、成三朝，好直言极谏，多次获罪，仕途不得志，但从不退缩。刘向学问渊博，曾奉诏整理五经秘书、诸子诗赋近二十年。其著作今存《新序》《说苑》《列女传》等几种。刘向在版本学、校雠学、目录学、辨伪学，乃至图书编纂等几个方面的开拓之功与创新贡献，都极为卓著，是中国古文献学学科的奠基者。
